IDSVA support at One25

women casework bench

We have three Independent Domestic & Sexual Violence Advocates (IDSVAs) within our specialist casework team.

IDSVAs work with women who are street sex-working in Bristol and have experienced, or are experiencing, domestic or sexual violence, supporting them to increase their safety, reduce risk, and gain independence.

As well as living with the lasting impact of historic abuse, many of the women we meet face violence as a daily reality. This can be from partners who exhibit violent or controlling behaviour and from strangers who target them on the streets because they perceive them to be vulnerable.

Last year, 98% were survivors of domestic or sexual violence.

How do IDSVAs help?

IDSVA Jasmine explains how she supports women who are street sex-working:

IDSVA support includes:

  • wellbeing and emotional support
  • help to access housing, including emergency accommodation
  • help to manage finances
  • support with criminal proceedings, injunctions and reporting to police
  • support to access healthcare and Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs)
  • safety advice about known perpetrators of violence, such as reports from the National Ugly Mugs scheme
  • using DASH assessments to identify risks to women’s safety*
  • advocating for women at Multi Agency Risk Assessment Conference (MARAC) meetings

They also support women to get help from One25’s other services: the night outreach van and the afternoon health hub.

*DASH stands for Domestic Abuse, Stalking and Harassment and Honour Based Violence (DASH) Risk Identification and Assessment and Management Model.

"I went through a horrible situation and I don't think I could of [put] the man who did it to me in prison if I didn't have support from One25 and the [police] Vice team. Thank you."

- Gigi

With the right support, last year 127 women were safer. 33 accessed victim support services and 66 reported an experience of violence to us.

"One25 let me take the time I needed and were there when I was ready to access help around domestic violence with my ex-partner.  I can't explain how it felt to finally open up and to say 'I'm not ok'."

- Sofia
