For the last 30 years we have seen thousands of women take life-changing steps: from flagging down our outreach van for the first time to reporting an experience of violence. From her first conversation with a caseworker to detoxing from drugs.
Flipping through the annual reports we’ve written since 1995, it’s disheartening how often the same challenges come up: high levels of violence and a lack of suitable housing for women on release from prison.
It’s fascinating to see how women’s needs have changed and how we responded to meet them: the number of women street sex-working is now smaller than it was in 1995 but the disadvantages they face are increasingly complex.
It’s poignant how often women’s words echo each other, demonstrating that the commitment and care of One25 haven’t changed.
Recently Liz told us:
"A cup of tea was just huge, knowing it came from someone who cared. It meant a lot more than just a hot drink."
-
In a letter from 2001, another woman wrote:
"You were my lifeline; it was more than just a place to have a coffee."
-
As we consider the future of One25, we know that some things won’t change.
We will continue to be there for women who street sex work, offering the practical support that can help them be safer and healthier. Their needs are, have been, and always will be, at the heart of our services.
But some things must change.
We want to live in a world where all women are safe, feel loved, and can thrive, so we must keep challenging the injustices that restrict their options and push them towards crisis. This means raising more awareness of the impact of trauma and working with others to tackle violence against women and inequalities in healthcare.
So in 30 years’ time we can tell a different story, where fewer women need to be resilient in the face of hardship because fewer women face injustice in the first place.
A gift of £30 could give specialist casework support to a woman as she reports an experience of violence.
A monthly gift is a pledge to stand beside women facing crisis. Your donations will be used where they are most needed: from stocking the outreach van to training our volunteers to provide the best care possible.
Make a difference for women street sex-working in Bristol while you celebrate an important occasion or remember a precious person this year: from donating your birthday to putting on your own event.
A gift in your will is a promise to help the women who will need One25 in the future. You may never meet them but you’ll make it possible for them to get specialist, compassionate care.
Thank you for sharing our vision and being part of our movement for change. Your support will make a difference for the women we meet today and in the years to come.
